To be considered for graduate admission to the University of Texas at Austin, candidates must meet both the minimum requirements set the Graduate School, and the requirements of the Microbiology Graduate Program
Academic Preparation & Recommended Requirements
The Microbiology Graduate Program expects applicants to have a degree in microbiology or a similar area and have successfully completed at least one year each of biology, calculus, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physics. Additional specialty courses and research experience in microbiology and/or biochemistry are highly encouraged. Students with any deficiencies in these areas should remedy them before applying to the program.
The University of Texas Graduate School recommends a minimum grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
International Applicants
International students applying for admission to the University of Texas at Austin must submit either an official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score report demonstrating an adequate knowledge of English. The Institutional TOEFL (ITP) is not accepted.
ILS programs require international applicants to have a minimum score of 80 on the internet-based TOEFL exam. The IELTS equivalent test score is 6.5-7.0.
International students with completed bachelor's degrees from a U.S. institution or from an institution in another English-only speaking country, or who are from a qualifying country may exempt from this requirement. Please visit the Office of Graduate Admissions for additional information.
Application Process & Deadline
All candidates for admission must complete an online application, submit the required application materials, and pay the application fee by the deadline.
Applications are only accepted for the fall semesters and only for admission to the PhD program.

Applicants are responsible for monitoring the progress of their application and ensuring that all required materials have been submitted and received by the Office of Graduate Admissions. Please do not send materials directly to the graduate program staff or department office.

When to Apply
Fall 2024 Application Deadline:
Fall 2025 applications will open September 1st, 2024 and close December 1st, 2024.
Please do not wait until the last minute to apply. We recommend that students apply in advance of the deadline to ensure that all materials are received on-time by the Office of Graduate Admissions.
Applications received after the deadline may be considered, at the discretion of the admissions committee. However, late applicants may not be invited to interview or participate in recruitment events.
After you Apply/Timeline
Once completed, please monitor your application via the MyStatus portal. Applications are not reviewed by the admissions committee until after the deadline.
Following committee review, qualified applicants may be invited to conduct an admissions interview and/or visit the UT campus during program recruitment events. Recruitment events are typically held in February and provide opportunity to meet faculty and current graduate students, experience the university campus, and to explore Austin.
Admissions decisions will be posted in the MyStatus portal, with additional notifications sent via email.
Final admissions decisions for all candidates are typically released in mid-February to mid-March.

The admissions process is selective and not all who apply are accepted. Admissions and enrollment statistics for recent years are accessible via the Graduate School website. Competitive applicants often have prior laboratory experience and strong letters of recommendation.
