Registration and Tuition

Registering for classes and managing your tuition bill

Below is a general timeline of information to help students navigate registration and tuition processing each semester.

Before Registration:

  • Follow all instructions to clear the hold(s) prior to the registration access period.
Registration Holds / Bars

Below are the most common holds that ILS students see on their registration. It is not a comprehensive list of all possible holds. Please use this link to read more about the different types of registration holds and how to resolve them:  https://onestop.utexas.edu/registration-and-degree-planning/registering-for-classes/resolving-holds/

  • Advising Hold (ADV)

    • Students NOT yet in candidacy: UT automatically places an ADV bar on your account each semester. ILS Admin will clear this bar. We work to try to clear it as soon as registration opens, but sometimes there can be delays. If you find you have this bar please reach out to ILSgrad@austin.utexas.edu

    • Students in candidacy: This bar will be added to your account if you have not scheduled your Annual Committee Meeting (ACM) by March 30 or if it has been more than a week past your ACM date and your completion form has not yet been turned in. To have the bar removed, please email ILS Admin with the scheduled date of your ACM or complete your ACM form.

  • J-Hold

    • Students with a J-Hold must complete an English language skills screening, which is conducted by the English Language Center. This is a hold primarily for incoming students.

    • These screenings are offered at very specific times prior to and at the very start of the semester. Please plan your screening for as early as you are able to take it in order to ensure you are able to register for classes and get your tuition taken care of prior to the semester start deadline.

    • To find out more about the J-hold, how, where, and when to take the screening, and next steps after screening please visit ISSS's J-hold page

During Registration:

Full-time Registration Requirements:

To be eligible for academic employment, you must register for 3 credits during the Summer Semester and 9 credits in each of the Fall and Spring semesters.

Registration Periods

UT Austin’s course registration process takes place during prescribed access periods. You will not be able to register outside of these time periods and having to register in a later access period may result in a late fee that you will be responsible for paying.

How to Register

Please refer to the registration steps listed on the Texas OneStop Registration portal. You can register there, or on the Course Schedule webpage using the “add class” feature. The Course Schedule allows you to filter courses by semester, field, and graduate division.

After Registration

After you are enrolled in classes, ILS Admin will work with your PI's department to ensure that tuition and fee payments are processed.

Please note:  Tuition payments are NOT AUTOMATIC. They are processed by your home department, processing involves multiple administrative steps, so please allow a few weeks after you register for your tuition to show as paid.

Please see below for additional steps required to complete the registration process.

Waivers

If you are not a resident of Texas (domestic and international students) you will need to complete some waivers each semester to help your bill reach $0. Please refer to the Tuition Bill Waivers table for more information on the steps you should take.

Waiver What it does Who qualifies for it How to complete it
Non-Resident Tuition Waiver (GRA/TA)  Reduces Student tuition to resident level.

Non-Texas resident students who will have a GRA/TA/GRA&TA position during the semester

Non-Resident Tuition Waiver (GSF)  Reduces Student tuition to resident level.

Confirming Attendance

Confirming attendance is required to secure your enrollment but cannot be completed until your tuition is mostly paid.  If you have concerns about the processing of your tuition bill please email ILS Admin, ILSgrad@austin.utexas.edu. Make sure to go to My Tuition Bill to view your bill and confirm attendance before the deadline listed on the site.

Though Texas has no state income tax, your stipend and tuition payments will be subject to U.S. federal tax requirements and withholdings. Tax information for graduate students can be found here
